Cempedak luar pagar

I am not an ICT (information, communication technology to those who wonder and planned to Google for what it is..) savvy. I don’t bother much on the development of the technology. It’s moving too rapidly (much rapid than our RAPID transportation system in KL) and I am never interested to follow up with it. I am lost in translation when I go to Low Yat and Digital Mall or any IT fair. It’s really an unknown jungle to me. And I am married to someone who thinks that Mat Sentul is cool and Ahmad Jais’ white shoes are super cool, who owns stupidphone (since it’s not smartphone) that is about to fall apart anytime soon, with screen that’s full of scratches. No need any screen protector. To the outsiders, I am lost. To him, I am his super-terror wife. Best!

Computer is something that I have never bothered to own. All my life, I have only bought a computer like gadget once.. or now twice. The first ever is my Acer Tab and the second is my iPad2. I don’t think I would ever get an iPad2 if I didn’t get it in the lucky draw. I use computer mostly for work related matters. When I am at home, I rarely turn on my laptop. Oh, I did utilise my laptop heavily once upon a time when I was searching for a hubby. Somehow my hubby who is lost in the dense of ICT jungle and me who is slightly better than him, found each other in the cyberworld! Isn’t it ironic! Muehehehe..

I have always been using computers issued by company or school when I was studying (or boyfriend issued ;) ). Everything built in, and I am just to use it. Should there be any problem, ICT dept will help to solve it. Same goes with smartphone. I have never bothered to learn about smartphone. And I only started using it when the company issued me with a BB. Otherwise, I might still use a stupidphone. Since it’s company issued, I never bothered about any of the charges incurred. Same with computer, all built in. ICT will be referred to if there’s any problem with it. Senang.

I only realised that I am total lost when I wanted to purchase my Acer Tab. I know nothing about computer’s tech spec. Nothing. I get confused between RAM and ROM. I don’t know about the latest processor. I don’t know the size. I don’t know the speed. I don’t know what are the latest size and speed that people are talking about. I don’t know the necessary software to support the computer. Ever since I have to use a computer, everything has been given to me on a silver platter. Guna je.

Same goes with smartphones. I was lost when people talked about android. And android always referred to some cookies or dessert. Thanks to Google, I am not that lost anymore. I can at least understand enough about it. Just enough. Nothing more.

And with smartphones, comes the payment plan. I don’t know how much it costs per month to use a smartphone. Anything and everything that I used on my BB is all covered under the company package. I just use. I don’t even know if it costs the company anything at all if I am running FB or twitter or any apps in the background. I don’t even know if they used up the ‘gigs’ (I really don’t know what is the right term for it!).

Ehem. The above is just the intro..

And so I have an iPad.. But I don’t have any internet connection to make it work in a place without a wifi connection. I haven’t bought the SIM card for it yet and trying to figure out the best option. I thought of asking the hubby to get for himself a smartphone. With that will come a phone bill that I couldn’t imagine the amount. We already have a Maxis broadband at home. A dongle. So can only be used on a single laptop but no use for iPad. And he has a stupidphone bill to pay for now.

So.. if I get a SIM card for my iPad which will not be compatible to Maxis dongle, between both of us then we have 2 lines that won’t be fully utilise. And when he gets his smartphone, that’s another SIM card and another bill. Of course the easiest solution is to get a SIM card for my iPad, keep the Maxis broadband that at times crawl rather than run, and hubby to get his smartphone. For someone who doesn’t really rely on internet to feel alive, I just feel that it’s too much. Hubby can actually live with his stupidphone but I am just sick of looking at it. Boleh? But then when we talk about smartphone, he wants Galaxy Note. Eksyen tak boleh blah. Wants the latest and greatest. Pergh.

And so, with a problem statement, I spoke to a friend who is an ICT whore. He is just a whore. Either that or a pimp. He is confused which one would he prefer. He suggested me to buy a mobile broadband router. Basically with the router, I just need to plug the Maxis broadband dongle into it and walla both hubby and I can share the connection. With the advice, I went and bought one myself. It works fine, but the problem is I have to hook it to a power source. It doesn’t run on a battery. Urgh. But bought already, okay! So gunalah.

Then I gatal-gatal went and surf looking for other options. I am yet to be satisfied. Yelah, I still have to have a power connection and it’s not all that user-friendly in that sense, right? And I bumped into Yes 4G line. The way it was advertised, attracted me to. Well, that’s the power of advertisement. And the powerless of a gullible. It said that for RM68, I could get 3.5GB data, 150 free calls to any operators in Malaysia, 150 free sms to any operators in Malaysia. And I could buy it online. And I could choose my number. Sounds attractive isn’t it? I thought it should work well on my iPad, on hubby’s laptop as well as on hubby’s future smartphone. Got number maaaa.. Can sms maaaa.. My coolest solution! So I thought. And so I bought it. Once the transaction was done, all I got was a thank you. Erk? Where to get the SIM card loh? Of course I have made sure I know where their stores are located. And so I went to the store.

Although I am not an ICT savvy, I am not dumb. I can understand the basic explanation from the salesgirl. Or anyone for that matter. I still have some brain cells that I have allocated to understand bits and pieces on ICT. From her I found out that 4G line doesn’t come with a SIM card. Bodoh. I know that I have to get their device but what I didn’t know was that there’s no SIM card that comes with the device. There are a few devices that they have and I chose huddle. I am not going to explain what huddle is here. Google please. The good part about the huddle is that it has a battery on its own. Brilliant. And yes I can use the huddle with a smartphone. Tapi tulah. Got to carry the huddle around together with the phone. Grrrr… Bodoh.

And yet my problem is not solved.

And I still don’t know if running FB or twitter or anything in the background would consume the ‘gig’ or not. And I still don’t know if I use PAYU plan, would running those apps be considered as YU. It should be isn’t it? Grrr…

And the list of ICT things that I now own:
Acer Tab (which my bro-in-law is interested to buy)
iPad2 wifi and 3G (but yet to have a SIM card)
mobile broadband router (which now I feel like selling it)
Yes 4G line and huddle

I feel like I am becoming a whore. Or a pimp. Whore works for a pimp. Pimp owns a whore.

Muahahha nak gelak dulu komen kat atas tu.

SIs, I have ipad lama. Pakai prepaid plan jek. I've tried digi, maxis and celcom(instanet). Register macam prepaid. pastu suruh dia potong sim card biasa jadik micro sim. pastu yang dipotong tadi jangan buang, kot2 you need to use it to top up ke haper ke, so boleh pasang di phone balik. I subscribe whenever I wanna use it jek. Sebab I ada router wireless on streamyx dekat rumah so takdelah keperluan nak ada 3G connection memanjang. Bila nak gi oustation baru I subscribe broadband daily which is rm5 per day or broadband weekly which is rm18 per week. Unlimited. That solution fits me well, sebab aku taknak maintan bill banyak2. Pay as you go ler konon2 cuma jangan sampai 3 bulan tak top up tu jek. The only thing that I hate is, I have to take out the micro sim, letak dekat sarangnya, masukkan dekat phone, top up dan sms broadband daily/weekly or monthly. Kemudian masukkan ler balik dekat ipad. But sebab aku nakkan flexibility itu, where i dont have to pay fix bill every month, once in a while nak pakai the 3G baru aku subscribe kak. Err kalau tak paham boleh email aku. gemarena70s@yahoo.com.my
